The cost of obesity

The cost of obesity

The stats speak for themselves. Obesity is a heavy burden on public finances. Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England, recently reported that NHS England spend around £16 Billion per year on the direct medical costs of diabetes and conditions related to being overweight or obese.* That’s more than both the fire and police services.

And it’s not just direct medical costs, it’s the whole UK economy. McKinsey and Company recently estimate that the overall cost to the UK economy of being overweight or obese is $73 Billion per year.**

Our weight really is slowing us down, denting our public finances and damaging our health. Let’s take positive action to reverse this trend.
